When somebody explains to me that we need to have leadership in this world, they generally mean one of two things. Either we need to conform to one type of mindset, or we need somebody to take the first steps into the unknown. Obviously, the latter seems far more attractive by comparison.
But maybe it isn't. After all, how many people do you know take the necessary leaps into the abyss? Human Nature is built on staying comfortable, no matter what the cost might be. This is why our History has been constructed by Tyrants, Monarchs and all around Selfish Leaders. It might be depressing, but at least it's comfortable. And it's difficult to convince a whole population to give new ideas the trust they deserve.
But maybe this can change with the right person. A human being who is both charismatic yet open-minded enough to take the necessary risks. But where can we find such a person in our day to day lives? Well, that answer obviously depends on a multitude of factors. But the biggest steps is to help somebody convince themselves that they could be this type of leader. Now, how is this possible (I know, a lot of questions)? Well, this comes in the form of Metamorphosis. Maybe not in the sense of Physical Change (although that could happen) but in a Spiritual One. I'm not talking about Religion either. Every Human (no matter where they come from) has a Creative Voice that could be heard by listening to an inner-spirit. And if there is one person who perfectly listens to their inner-spirit, it is Elizabeth Colunga.
Before we get into the meat of this Article, a little history on Elizabeth. She is (mostly) known for being a film editor. But today we are going to focus on another aspect of her personality, her voice. It's odd that we as species never see the voice as a Trait outside of Political Pundits. But today, we are going to change that course.
So what does it mean to have a True Voice? After all, couldn't anybody who knows how to speak have a Voice as well? Well technically, yes you can. But as my readers know well enough, technicality should only belong to machines. So what makes it possible for somebody to have a Voice (as subjectively as I put that term in my blog)?
Well, the first & foremost aspect is to keep an open-mind. I know, sounds simple right? As easy as it might sound, the execution is quite different. As I stated earlier, the human race has a lust for comfort that can take over our need to grow. The best way to keep a lifestyle of growth is to keep an open-mind. Now I want to make clear that an Open-Mind doesn't necessarily mean an overly-acceptance mind. You should always Critically think about the world around you, and take each consideration with a grain of speculative execution. But you should always try to keep a level of bias out of your train of thought. Criticize yourself more than you criticize another person. Even I have trouble with that last statement. But luckily, Elizabeth doesn't.
When I had the distinct pleasure of interviewing Elizabeth, I noticed how open she was to my lifestyle. I want to clarify that Elizabeth is not an Experimental Artist. But I wanted to write about her due to the fact that she is proof that she had an open-mind. When she first heard about the Experimental Arts Scene, she might have been confused. But once I explained why it was so important to me (and everybody else I've written about) she got intrigued. And now she is a fan of my blog & other Artists I've written about (like John Hartman). This is what I mean when I talk about being open-minded.
Another trait that Elizabeth utilizes is the ability to decipher the difference between those who are honest & those who trick others. It's no surprise that the United States is a Country (despite all of it's good) full of fake people. It seems like the general population would prefer a fake smile over an honest face of tranquility. But Elizabeth knows the difference between the Values of being Nice & what it means to conform to the comforts given by society. This is another Trait that leaders need to possess but unfortunately don't. Elizabeth constantly tries to bring her positivity to the forefront in every conversation she is part of. But don't count her as a hapless fool, as she is very aware of the world around her.
Elizabeth is part of a local Denver faith-based organization titled Denver Community Church. Here group members are brought on board to take a chance & try to change the world. Surprising, especially with the track record on Religious Authoritarianism (in the United States). This Church has taught Elizabeth a whole assortment of Philosophies. But that is the important word, TAUGHT, not FORCED. This church is truly setting the stepping stones for the future.
Why I brought this Church up though is because it shows just how Elizabeth is as a person. Elizabeth is a follower of Jesus Christ. To give you context, I believe in a higher power, but not one explained by human beings (and I used to be an Agnostic-Atheist). But she is a vocal critic of the manipulation of Religion, something I found interesting. But this one fact shows the traits I just mentioned above. She was open-minded enough to give Religion a chance. She was kind enough to treat everybody with the kind and respect they deserve. But she was also Critical enough to not allow anybody who believes in the same Deity to conform her opinions.
All of these points is why Elizabeth is an excellent example of a Leader the World should look up towards. But before we end I would like to mention another new point.
You see I discovered Elizabeth by a Facebook Post. I guess we were friends from a while ago (we live in the same City). But as I was just glancing at an Instagram Video she posted (which I will post down below), I discovered just how dedicated she was to the promise of change. The odd fact was that it all came so natural to her. It wasn't a struggle in anxiety like judgment (like it is with yours truly). And allow me to explain why this is so inspiring to see.
We live in an ecosystem that forces us to follow individual lifestyles. Rather this is Mandatory (like having to make Money) or Subjective (the obsession of a Sports Team) our freedoms honestly don't exist. Not unless you count the ability to pick a handful of careers or the capacity to choose what you eat the equivalent of liberty. Now I'm not one who suggests that we should become Anarchists, but I absolutely advocate more Experimentation. Human-Beings weren't birthed to follow a list of commands by somebody who is apparently 'more successful.' Our Culture has lost a Spark of Iniquity & Metaphysical Thinking. Again, I'm bringing this back to our obsession with Comfort & Control.
Now because we have been duped into thinking that we must follow a certain path, many of us lose ourselves at a young age. I would say in the United States; this is generally a Teenager (could be older or younger, depending on their upbringing). Now Teenagers feel like they want to fit in because our culture tells them that Popularity is important. Our culture also forces them to think about future success instead of focusing on the perceptions in the present. The future is a winding road, and you shouldn't bet any eggs into what might happen in the future. Not to mention, if we are going to Focus on the Future, it should be concentrated on Saving This Planet (but that's another story for another day).
Now I fell into this trap, as did a good majority of Americans. And it was a Trap that was very difficult to come out of (I didn't actually realize the weight of Conformity until I left my day job a little over a year ago). And it's a trap that most people never get out of, even if they have the chance to do so (some people just try to make it day to day, and you can't judge them).
That one Statement of Conformity is one that Elizabeth & I discussed throughout the majority of our Conversation. And we were both so perplexed at the severity of this issue. But one thing that Elizabeth made a point to do was to always give a gleam of hope, despite the evidence that shows our worst fears. And we can see this in her Instagram Videos.
One of her best attributes is the ability to use a Ukulele to bring her point to fruition. But it isn't the Ukulele itself that makes these Videos work so well. Rather it is the Context in which the Ukulele is used. A Ukulele is an easy to understand yet often ignored instrument. Generally, when one thinks of a Ukulele, they think of it as the Joke Instrument. Compared this to other Lute Instruments, the Violin & Guitar, which are seen as Classy & Cool traditionally.
Now there is nothing that suggests that a Ukulele is any less important than a Violin or a Guitar. None of this is a Proven Science. Yet our Culture (through the use of Conformity) puts special privilege on the Violin & Guitar. Because a lot of famous Musicians used those Instruments, we instinctively believe they are more important (even though the Brilliance came from the Artists, not the Tool they used).
Now let's look at Elizabeth's Video. Not only does she not follow that belated & Ludacris assumption that a Ukulele is less important than the other two instruments, but she naturally sees it as an Extension. As I stated earlier, a lot of us who get out of the Conformity Trap have trouble giving new ideas a chance. We always second guess ourselves because we feel like we lied to ourselves earlier. At the very least, I do. But Elizabeth never saw the Ukulele as a tool that she had to force herself to enjoy. She has a natural sense of satisfaction just from using the object in these videos. And that is incredibly inspiring to see, given how much the majority of us second guess ourselves.
I suggest that the Majority of you follow Elizabeth on Instagram. She also has great insight that would be foolish to spoil in this Article. But to end this off, I just want to go back to our lust of Comfort.
See (to me) there is a difference between Comfort & Contentment. Even though the definition might be the same, the meaning is truly different. When I think of the word Comfort, I think of a business person sitting back and allowing their profession to take them over in order to keep "Security." Or (maybe because I worked at a Hotel) I think of an Advertisement that Promises to give you the 'best pleasure possible.' I would assume that most people would use the word Comfort as a way to never worry again. Kind of like the message from that Overrated Song in The Lion King (I know, I'm sorry I brought up The Lion King in an Article, but I couldn't think of another example). But that is a sorrowful, lackluster life.
Now let's look at Contentment. When I think of the word, I think of an inner-peace. Where you ignore the conformities of the world & listen to your inner spirit. You continuously have a love of growth & a passion for seeing people for who they really are. They don't mind going down the Rabbit-Hole if it will help them learn something about themselves. And they ignore the misguided needs of The World & Try to use their natural ingenuity to guide those who might be lost.
I can't claim to be Content, although I'm trying to be. But Elizabeth Colunga is an Example of somebody who is Content, Not Comfortable. Now that she has led by example, will you try to follow your true self? Or will you continue to lie until it is too late?
