Since the dawn of humanity, exploration has always been one of our greatest traits. The Human Mind naturally wants to expand & solve the issues we don't understand. This mindset has inspired our species to think outside the box & imagine a world full of endless possibilities. It's the mentality that made our species progress from Wild Animals to Educated Citizens. So, does our society still respect the mindset of exploration?
Well, that answer comes down to the type of Individual Industry and/or Person. But in the world of Artistic endeavors, the answer isn't as clear as some might hope. We live in a time where Exploratory Mindsets keep battling those who find Comfort in Conformity. And unfortunately, Conformity has been far more accepted in our modern day society than the mentality of Exploring New Ideas.
But don't worry; it isn't all doom & gloom. The Natural Expressions of a Human Artist will always shine brighter than an Artificial Light made by a Conformed Clone. The Real Question should be can a Natural Artist make it in the world plagued by Artificial Commercialism? Well, that question has a more depressing tone once the answers start to unravel. But it isn't an entirely hopeless endeavor either.
Exploration is part of Human DNA, rather the society we build for ourselves wants to believe it or not. Indeed you can't convince Every Human on Earth that their natural instincts are so dangerous. And in the world of Art & Artistic Endeavors, Society can only buy so much until an Artist defies their system & goes back to their natural instincts. Sometimes these Artists live without any sort of Representation. But there are other times where Exploratory Artists can gain the recognition they deserve & create an actual impact.
Daniel Iglesias Jr. has continuously defied the pre-conceived odds. He has a steady persistence towards a Vision that can Magnetize the Minds of Any Observer. He has Directed Music Videos with some of the most celebrated names in the Music Business. These Artists include AlunaGeorge, Hunter Hayes, The Neighbourhood & The Recently Successful Electronic Music Duo XYLØ. Every single video he directs has a Unique Vision that brings True Artistry in an otherwise Stale & Commercialized Landscape.
But Daniel isn't just a Filmmaker with a Vision of his own. Once you look deep into the surface, you see that he has the mind of an Explorer. I had the pleasure of interviewing the Filmmaker on the 1st of June. We talked about a multitude of topics (which we will get into in the Article). But there was one trait that was always consistent, regardless of his answer. He isn't just a guy who whines about the industry. Instead, he works very hard to show others how important his Vision is. It's this type of Work Ethic that can change the perspective of anybody that questions otherwise.
Now Work Ethic can be misconstrued in our culture. When somebody talks about Work Ethic in the United States, they generally talk about Devout Employees at Massive Corporations. Or, to put it in perspective, people who just worship their boss & never take a risk. That is why the word "Work Ethic" is generally viewed as a negative slang term in the Millennial Generation. The last thing we want to be is a bunch of Robotic Sheep who can't think outside their Multinational Corporate Jobs. But Daniel shows us that Work Ethic should be celebrated because the actual term is worth celebrating.
You can have Great Work Ethic & Still have an Open-Minded Exploratory Mindset. In fact, it's necessary to have Great Work Ethic in order to achieve success. And that is precisely what Daniel was able to do with his Film & Music-Video Career. Unlike a lot of other Artists, Daniel doesn't shame himself when he talks about Pre-Production. He plans everything beforehand, making sure every single detail is precise before he begins to film.
But Daniel has also talked about how much he had to fight in order to make Vision come true. In the Music Video "Sweater Weather" which was Directed 4+ Years Ago for The Neighbourhood, he talked about how he wanted to have a Slow-Moving Shot to build a sense of Atmosphere. The Record Label wanted the Video to be highly edited & have a bunch of jump-cuts. Most Radio-Based Music Videos have this type of Editing Style. But as anybody who has ever heard "Sweater Weather" knows, the song isn't a Generic fast-paced Pop song you listen to on the Radio. It's slow, pristine & eloquent. Luckily Daniel was able to bring his Vision to Life, and Perfectly match the tone of "Sweater Weather."
Daniel shows that Artists with Real Work Ethic are Fighters & Leaders, not followers. He fought for his Vision & now he is the main Music Video Director for The Neighbourhood because of it. We see this in all of the videos he has Directed.
An ignorant businessperson might think that Daniel directed the recent music video "I Still Wait For You" by XYLØ because they are currently popular. After-All, the song associated with this Video has 2 Million Plus views on Youtube Alone. But the interesting fact is that Daniel knew XYLØ well before that song ever dropped onto the world. He saw their potential before the world saw it. Because of this XYLØ asked Daniel to Independently Direct the Music Video for "I Still Wait For You." In the Music-Video Industry that Rarely ever happens, especially with a duo as well-known as XYLØ. But Daniel was able to Prove his Vision to them & because of that everybody is rewarded with a Video that Stands Out From The Crowd.
And that is the one trait I want all of my readers to gain from this Article. You must Prove yourself to this world, regardless of the trials. Anybody can complain about how the world isn't fair enough to True Artists, but that won't change anything. Daniel is proof that if you put the Work & Passion, you can make anything possible. The Musicians he works with see him as a Creative Equal, not a wishful whiner who happens Direct their Video. That is a trait very few Directors in The Film Industry Possess, which is why we should all celebrate the Visionary Work of Daniel.
But as I said earlier in the Article, Daniel is also an Explorer. That means he always tries to push himself with every new project. It would be one thing for Daniel to stick with one style & Advertise that Style until it gets old. But the more you look, the more you see how Diverse his Videos truly are.
The Music Video Daniel Directed right before "I Still Can't Wait For You" was a video titled "We Don't Want To Dance" by a Musician named Jane. The Style in "We Don't Want To Dance" couldn't be any more different than the style in "I Still Can't Wait For You." For example in "We Don't Want To Dance," everything is bright & clear. It feels like a Warm Welcome to an Awesome Time. However, in "I Still Can't Wait For You," the style is the complete opposite. All of the Colors & Lights are Harsh & Create a sense of hopelessness. It creates the illusion of lost opportunity. Again, both of these Videos match the tones of their respective songs perfectly. But what's amazing is that Daniel was able to take these tonally different Artists & show them in a way that makes their song stand out. Most Music-Videos are bland & only focus on the Artist at hand. But Daniel concentrates on the tone & message that the song handles, and because of that, his work is far more memorable. That is why these Artists trust Daniel & why we should Celebrate his achievements.
Daniel has also dabbed his hands into Experimental Filmmaking. While he enjoys his Music-Video work, he always wants to do more. Hence the Exploratory Mindset that Artists like him possess. But these Films still adhere to some of the Philosophies he set up for himself. For Example, in the film "The Family You Formed" Daniel planned out how every edit would incorporate. He had footage from his childhood, which a lot of 90's kids had as well. But the placement of all of this footage is very particular & purposefully done. Not only were we able to watch the family grow, but we got to see what the family dynamic was all about. Usually, in a film like this, we have a Voiceover to explain what is happening on screen (like a documentary). But Daniel was brave enough to Trust his Audience and show us what his family was about without any spoon-feeding. The impact is quite intimate & we care more about Daniels upbringing because of it.
To end this Article off, we must begin where we started. We live in a time where Exploring is very rare, even in the world of Art & Entertainment. But Daniel Iglesias Jr. has shown that through Hard Work & Determination, any type of pre-convinced notion can be overturned. The profound truth is that he didn't need my help in promoting his work. He already has the Talent & Networking Base to make his Vision come into Reality. But I'm glad I got to talk about him because he is proof that any Visionary Artist can gain an Audience. Sitting down isn't going to change the way the world functions. Instead, we should get up, create the film we want & garner a following. Daniel Iglesias Jr. is an Explorer who inspires others to Explore with him. The real question is, are you going to follow his example or are you going to play it safe & complain later?
